How to Watch Live Sports Abroad: Premier League, F1, NBA

To watch live sports abroad, connect to a VPN server in the country where your subscription is based, then open the streaming app. Most sports services only stream inside the territory they hold rights for, so your Sky, DAZN, League Pass or F1 TV login stops working the moment you land somewhere else. A VPN makes you appear to be at home. It does not give you a subscription, and no service can be guaranteed to work with it.

  • Sports rights are sold per country, so your home service checks your IP address before every stream.
  • Connect to the nearest server inside your home country for the lowest latency.
  • Blackouts (Saturday 3pm, NBA local markets, MLB home markets) are location checks too.
  • EU residents can use their paid services across the EU without a VPN.

Why are live sports streams geo-locked?

Leagues sell broadcast rights one territory at a time, and each buyer pays only for its own territory. Sky pays for the UK and Ireland, NBC for the United States, beIN for the Middle East. A broadcaster that let its stream leak into another territory would be selling something it does not own, so the rights contract obliges it to check where every viewer is.

That check is a location check: your IP address first, your DNS servers second, and on phones sometimes GPS. Blackouts work the same way in reverse. A league blacks out a game in a region where someone else holds the local rights, so League Pass hides your home team's games and the Premier League keeps Saturday 3pm kick-offs off UK screens.

The app sees a home-country IP address and home DNS; on phones it may also read GPS, which the VPN does not change.

How to watch live sports abroad with a VPN, step by step

  1. Set up before you fly. Install the VPN on the phone, laptop or Fire TV Stick you will watch on, and sign in on home WiFi. Check the streaming app works there first.
  2. Connect to your home country. Choose the country where the subscription was bought. For a UK Sky or NOW account that means a UK server, even if you are in Spain.
  3. Pick the nearest server in that country. Live video punishes latency more than downloads do. If the app offers cities, pick the one closest to where you are.
  4. Confirm the location. Open the IP checker; it should show your home country before you open the sports app.
  5. Restart the streaming app. Force-close it, or clear cookies in a browser. Most apps cache the last location decision until they restart.
  6. If the stream is blocked, switch server. Connect to another server in the same country. If the service still detects a VPN, ask support for one that currently works.

Do this 15 minutes before kick-off, not at kick-off. The guide to streaming while travelling covers the general setup for on-demand services; the sections below cover what is specific to each sport.

How to watch the Premier League abroad

In the UK, Sky Sports and TNT Sports share live Premier League rights for the four seasons from 2025-26, with Sky showing at least 215 matches a season and TNT around 52. Saturday 3pm kick-offs are not shown live by any UK broadcaster because of the long-standing blackout; the BBC holds highlights. These facts are current as of October 2026, and the Premier League publishes its broadcaster list by territory.

Sky's position is that UK customers have no entitlement to stream Sky Go or Sky Sports outside the UK, and since Brexit the EU portability rules no longer cover UK services. A UK subscriber abroad therefore needs a UK VPN server for Sky Go, NOW or the TNT Sports app, and even then the service may detect the VPN.

Every service in that table streams only inside its own territory and sells only to residents with a local payment method. Buying a foreign service to watch 3pm games from the UK breaks its terms, and the service will usually detect it. This article is about using your own subscription while you travel.

How to watch Formula 1 abroad

F1 has its own streaming service, F1 TV, but it is sold country by country and withheld wherever a broadcaster holds exclusive live rights. In the UK, live coverage is on Sky Sports F1 and NOW, with free highlights on Channel 4, and F1 TV does not offer live sessions. In the United States, Apple TV holds the live rights from the 2026 season; US Apple TV subscribers get F1 TV Premium included, and as of October 2026 the standalone F1 TV Pro plan is no longer sold to US residents.

What this means abroad: if you hold an F1 TV Pro subscription from a country where it is sold and travel to the UK, live sessions are blocked, because F1 TV reads a UK IP address as a market where it has no live rights. Connect to a server in the home country before the session starts, and open the app fresh. A UK Sky subscriber abroad has the same problem in reverse and needs a UK server for the Sky Sports or NOW app.

Sessions are long, so pick a server close to you inside your home country and use WireGuard. Switching servers during a session usually means signing in to the app again.

NBA, NFL and MLB abroad: League Pass and blackout rules

The US leagues sell season passes directly, which suits expats, but all three apply blackouts based on where you are.

  • NBA League Pass. In the US, games shown nationally on ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock or Prime Video under the deal that began in 2025-26 are blacked out on League Pass, as are games in your local market, and the NBA uses your location to apply them. International League Pass is sold per country with fewer blackouts, but it checks your location too.
  • NFL. Outside the US, NFL Game Pass is sold through DAZN and is not available in the US at all. In the UK and Ireland, two Sunday games a week are blacked out live and released on demand 24 hours later. Inside the US, the equivalent product is NFL+.
  • MLB.TV. MLB.TV is an out-of-market service: your home team's games and nationally televised games are blacked out, and MLB says blackouts apply based on your physical location, which may be determined using factors including your IP address. In 2026 clubs also sell in-market direct plans that remove the local blackout.

A traveller with a US League Pass who connects to a US server gets the same blackout map they would have at that server's location. Using a VPN to dodge a blackout you would face at home breaks the league's terms, and the leagues block known VPN ranges; this guide is about keeping the access you already have while travelling.

Football in Europe and the Middle East: DAZN, beIN and EU portability

DAZN runs as a separate service in each country, with different rights in each. In the Middle East and North Africa, beIN Sports holds the Premier League and much of the big European football. A DAZN Germany login works in Germany; a beIN subscription from the UAE works in the beIN MENA region.

EU residents have a legal shortcut. Under EU Regulation 2017/1128 on cross-border portability, a paid online content service must let a subscriber who is temporarily in another EU country use the service as if they were at home, at no extra cost. The provider verifies your country of residence, often from your payment method and address. So a DAZN Italy subscriber on holiday in France can stream Serie A without a VPN. The rule has not covered the UK since Brexit, and it only covers temporary stays, not a move.

Which VPN server is best for live sports?

The nearest server inside your home country. A live stream is sensitive to latency and packet loss, not raw bandwidth. An HD stream needs around 5 Mbps, which almost any server can supply, but every extra thousand kilometres of fibre adds round-trip time, and a congested server drops packets that your player has to wait for.

  • If the app lists cities, pick the one geographically closest to where you are now.
  • Use WireGuard, which recovers from packet loss faster than OpenVPN TCP.
  • Avoid servers in the country you are visiting unless your subscription is from there; they will not pass the location check.

The general rules are in which VPN server location you should choose.

Why does my sports stream buffer with a VPN?

Usually one of four things, in this order of likelihood.

  1. The server is far away or busy. Switch to a closer or less loaded server in the same country.
  2. Wrong protocol. OpenVPN TCP on a lossy hotel WiFi stalls on every dropped packet. Switch to WireGuard or OpenVPN UDP unless the network blocks them.
  3. Weak WiFi. A TV stick behind a wall, or a hotel network shared by 300 rooms, loses packets before the VPN is involved. Move closer to the router or use a phone hotspot for the match.
  4. The stream quality is set too high for the link. Drop the app to 720p for the match and raise it again afterwards.
Four numbered causes of a buffering live stream over a VPN: distant or busy server, wrong protocol, weak WiFi and quality set too high
Try the fixes in this order: a closer server, WireGuard or OpenVPN UDP, a better WiFi position, then a lower stream quality.

Hotel networks have their own quirks, covered in does a VPN work on hotel WiFi. For TV sticks see the TV streaming buffering guide, and for the full list of speed settings see how to make your VPN faster.

Watching live sports abroad with FortisVPN

FortisVPN has servers in 100+ countries, and the server list shows every location and which protocols it supports, so you can check your home country has a server before you book. Pick the nearest server inside that country, leave the protocol on Auto, and switch to WireGuard under Settings if a stream stutters. The Fire TV and Android TV apps sign in with a code at fortisvpn.com/tv, which matters when you are setting up a stick on a hotel TV with a remote. One account covers 10 devices at the same time, so the phone, the laptop and the TV stick are all included. You can start a 7-day free trial before a trip; if a server stops working with a particular sports app, 24/7 support can point you to one that currently does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch Sky Sports abroad with my UK subscription?

Not officially. As of 2026 Sky says UK customers have no entitlement to stream Sky Go or Sky Sports outside the UK, and EU portability rules stopped applying to UK services after Brexit. Many subscribers use a UK VPN server with Sky Go or NOW. It can work, Sky's terms do not permit it, and Sky may detect the VPN.

Does a VPN get around NBA blackouts?

It changes the location League Pass sees, so connecting to a server outside your local market changes which games are blacked out. The NBA's terms prohibit this, the league blocks known VPN ranges, and nationally televised games stay blacked out across the whole US regardless of server. Treat it as unreliable rather than as a feature.

Is it legal to watch sports with a VPN abroad?

In most countries using a VPN is legal, and watching a service you pay for is not a crime. It can breach the service's terms of use, which lets the service block the stream or, in theory, close the account. A few countries restrict VPN use itself; check the law where you are travelling before you connect.

Does a VPN work with DAZN abroad?

DAZN runs country by country and checks your location before each stream, so you need a server in your subscription's country. EU residents inside the EU do not need one, because DAZN must honour portability rules. Elsewhere, connect to a server in the right country; if DAZN still detects a VPN, switch to another server in that country or ask support for one that currently works.
