WebRTC Leak Test

Check whether your browser is exposing your real IP address through WebRTC, which can bypass an otherwise working VPN connection.

Testing your browser…

What this test does

The test opens a WebRTC connection in your browser, the same way a video call would, and reads back the network addresses your browser offers to the other side. Any site you visit can run exactly this code without asking permission.

A public address in the results means a website could read that address even while your VPN is connected, because WebRTC asks your operating system for network interfaces directly rather than going through the tunnel. Private addresses on their own are not a privacy problem, but they confirm WebRTC is active.

Run the test twice, once with your VPN off and once with it on. If the public address is identical both times, WebRTC is bypassing the tunnel and should be disabled in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is a WebRTC leak?

WebRTC is a browser feature that powers video calls and peer-to-peer connections. To set up those connections it asks your network for your IP addresses, and it can do this outside the VPN tunnel. When that happens a site can read your real address even though a VPN is connected.

Does a WebRTC leak mean my VPN is broken?

Not necessarily. WebRTC operates at the browser level rather than the network level, so a VPN that is working correctly can still be bypassed by it. This is why browser-level protection matters alongside the VPN connection.

How do I stop WebRTC leaks?

You can disable WebRTC in your browser settings, install an extension that blocks it, or use a browser that restricts it by default. In Firefox, set media.peerconnection.enabled to false in about:config. Chrome requires an extension.

What are the local addresses this test shows?

Addresses beginning 192.168, 10. or 172.16 to 172.31 are private addresses used inside your own network. They do not identify you on the internet, but their presence shows that WebRTC is active and reporting network information.
