How to Watch Hulu Outside the US in 2026

To watch Hulu outside the US, connect to a VPN server in the United States, then open Hulu and sign in with a US-registered account. Hulu checks the country of your IP address every time you press play, so a US address is the part that matters; your plan, your profiles and your watch history come along unchanged. If Hulu still says it is only available in the US, switch to another US server and try again.

  • Hulu operates only in the United States; Hulu Japan is a separate company and a separate account.
  • You need a US IP address and a Hulu account with a US payment method or gift card.
  • Hulu checks IP address and DNS, and Live TV expects a home-network check-in every 30 days.
  • Hulu blocks addresses it links to VPNs, so no server is guaranteed; switch servers when one fails.

Why is Hulu only available in the US?

Hulu licenses its catalogue for the United States and its territories, and it has never launched the service anywhere else. Live TV goes further: Hulu states it is available in the 50 states and the District of Columbia only. Hulu Japan shares the name but has been owned by Nippon TV since 2014, with its own apps, catalogue and billing, so a US Hulu login does not work there.

Flow from a device abroad through an encrypted tunnel to a US VPN server and on to Hulu, which checks the IP country, DNS and its VPN list
Hulu never sees the VPN app itself; it reads the country of the address on every play, so a US server is what changes.

Outside the US, a growing slice of Hulu programming appears inside Disney+ instead. Since October 2025, Hulu has replaced the Star tile on Disney+ in international markets, and bundle subscribers in the US see Hulu content inside the Disney+ app. That does not make Hulu's full US catalogue available abroad; local licences still decide which titles each country gets.

Disney has said it plans to fold Hulu fully into Disney+ and has talked about a unified app in 2026. As of October 2026 the Hulu app and website still run as a separate service, and Disney has said people will still be able to buy Hulu or Disney+ on its own. If the apps merge, the VPN side of this guide stays the same; only the app you open changes.

What you need to watch Hulu abroad

  • A US IP address. Any US server works; pick one on the coast nearest to you for the shortest route.
  • A Hulu account. If you already subscribe, nothing changes. If you are signing up from abroad, Hulu's checkout expects a US billing address and a US payment method; cards issued elsewhere are usually declined.
  • A way to pay. Hulu gift cards redeem on the Account page and are the route most expats use. Hulu's terms require accurate personal details, so do not enter an address you are not entitled to use.
  • The app or the website. Both work with a VPN. Live TV adds the home-network rule below, so most people abroad stick to the on-demand plans.

Hulu's terms also state that its service is for US use, so watching abroad is outside them. Hulu enforces that by blocking the stream, as the error section explains.

How to watch Hulu outside the US step by step

Android phone or tablet

  1. Install the Hulu app. Google Play hides it outside the US, so install it before you travel, or sign in to a US-registered Google account.
  2. Connect the VPN to a US server. Wait for the key icon in the status bar.
  3. Force-stop Hulu, then open it and sign in. A fresh start makes the app check your location again.
  4. Turn off location permission for Hulu. Hulu's pages say location data may be required for some content; with the permission off, the app falls back to your IP address.

Windows laptop

  1. Connect the VPN to a US server. Wait for the connected state in the app.
  2. Open a private browser window and go to hulu.com. This avoids a cached non-US location in cookies.
  3. Sign in and play. If you see the proxy message, clear hulu.com cookies, switch server and reload.

Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV

  1. Install the VPN app on the TV. Google Play on Android TV and Google TV; the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV. With FortisVPN you sign in with a short code at fortisvpn.com/tv rather than typing with the remote.
  2. Connect to a US server and enable auto-connect. Then Hulu never opens before the tunnel is up.
  3. Open Hulu. The Hulu app only appears in US-registered TV stores, so a TV bought abroad may need its Amazon or Google account set to the US.

The Fire TV Stick setup guide covers a US-registered stick, which is the simplest Hulu set-up for a Samsung or LG TV that cannot run a VPN itself.

Hulu says not available in your location or anonymous proxy: fixes

The classic message is "Hulu is available in the U.S. only and cannot be used with an anonymous proxy service." Newer apps phrase it as content not being available in your location. Both mean Hulu has matched your address to a VPN or placed it outside the US. Work through these in order:

Six numbered fixes for the Hulu anonymous proxy message, from switching US server and clearing cookies to location permission and a restart
Try a server in a different US city before anything else; Hulu blocks addresses one at a time.
  1. Switch to a different US server. Hulu blocks addresses one at a time. A second server, ideally in a different city, is the first thing to try.
  2. Force-stop the app or clear cookies. Hulu caches the location it saw at sign-in. On Android: Settings, Apps, Hulu, Clear storage. In a browser, delete cookies for hulu.com.
  3. Check for IPv6 and DNS leaks. Hulu compares your video traffic with your DNS lookups. Run the IPv6 leak test, turn IPv6 off if it shows an address, and switch VPN protocol to reset DNS.
  4. Turn off other proxies and Smart DNS. A browser extension or a router DNS entry adds a second location signal.
  5. Disable location services for the app. On a phone or tablet, Hulu can use the device location; revoke the permission and reopen the app.
  6. Restart the device and the router. This clears cached DNS answers that still point to your real country.

The streaming service detects VPN page covers the same checks for every service, and the Netflix region guide explains the detection methods in more depth; Hulu uses the same ones.

Travelling abroad with an existing Hulu account

If you live in the US and are travelling, your account is already in order and the VPN is the only extra step. Two details are worth knowing. Downloads, available on the ad-free plans in the mobile app, play offline anywhere with no VPN, so download before the flight. And Hulu + Live TV expects the mobile app to connect from your home network at least once every 30 days; if you are away longer, live channels may stop until you are back, while on-demand titles keep working through the VPN.

Matrix of Hulu on-demand, Live TV and downloads against the US IP check, DNS check, 30-day home check-in and playing with the VPN off
A tick means the rule applies; only downloads escape every check, and Live TV adds the 30-day home check-in on top.

Payment is the other trap. If your card is reissued while abroad and the new one has a foreign billing address, Hulu may refuse it. Add a backup payment method or gift-card balance before a long trip. Streaming while travelling has the same checklist for the other services.

Is watching Hulu abroad against Hulu's terms?

Yes. Hulu's terms limit the service to the United States, and Hulu has long said proxies are blocked for contractual reasons: its licences only cover US viewers. The consequence Hulu applies is a blocked stream; its public pages do not describe account closures for VPN use, and the fix it offers is to turn the VPN off.

Two things follow from that. First, a VPN changes what Hulu sees, not what your ISP or the hotel network sees, so it is not hiding anything from anyone but Hulu. Second, the terms also require accurate account details, which matters more than the VPN: a US address you are not entitled to use is the part that could cost you the account. Using a VPN itself is legal in the US and most other countries. This article is general information, not legal advice.

Watching Hulu abroad with FortisVPN

FortisVPN has US servers on the server list. Connect to a server in the right country; if Hulu still detects a VPN, switch to another server in that country or ask support for one that currently works. Support is on live chat around the clock and keeps track of which US servers Hulu currently accepts.

Use WireGuard for HD and 4K streams, and OpenVPN TCP on port 443 if a hotel network blocks VPNs. Split tunnelling on the Android app and the TV apps keeps Hulu on the US tunnel while local apps stay off it, and one account covers 10 devices. Every plan has a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can start a 7-day free trial and test it on your own Hulu account first.

Frequently asked questions

Does Hulu work in Canada or the UK?

Not officially. Hulu has no Canadian or UK service, and the apps show the US-only message from either country. Some Hulu originals appear on Disney+ in Canada and the UK under the Hulu tile that replaced Star in late 2025. For the full Hulu catalogue you need a US account and a US IP address, with the usual caveat that Hulu may block a given server.

Can I use my Hulu account while travelling?

Yes, with a US VPN server, and downloads made in the US play anywhere with no VPN at all. On-demand plans behave normally abroad. Hulu + Live TV is the exception: it expects your mobile app to check in from home every 30 days, so live channels can stop on a long trip while on-demand titles keep working.

Why does Hulu say I am using an anonymous proxy?

Because the IP address you are connecting from is on Hulu's list of VPN and proxy addresses, or your DNS or IPv6 traffic is coming from a different country to your video traffic. Switch to another US server, force-stop the app or clear cookies, and run a leak test. If you have no VPN on, an antivirus suite's VPN or your ISP's shared addressing is the usual cause.

Does Hulu block VPNs?

Yes, by address. Hulu cannot see the VPN app, but it recognises addresses shared by many users and addresses that belong to hosting networks, and it blocks them as it finds them. Blocking is never complete, which is why one server fails and the next works. No provider can promise a server that stays unblocked, so treat any such claim with caution.

Can I pay for Hulu from outside the US?

Hulu's checkout is built for US payment methods, so a card with a foreign billing address is usually declined. Hulu gift cards, redeemed on the Account page, are the common route for people with a US address but a foreign card. Hulu's terms require accurate details, so only use a US address you are entitled to use.
