VPN adapter missing or "driver not installed" on Windows

Fortis says the network adapter is missing. Here is how to put it back.

Last updated September 25, 2026

Fortis needs a small part of Windows called a network adapter to carry your VPN traffic.

1. Install the adapter from Fortis

The first time you connect, Fortis shows Install the Fortis network adapter. Click Install adapter, then click Yes when Windows asks.

2. Try the other protocol

Choose OpenVPN or WireGuard and connect again. See Change the VPN protocol.

3. Reinstall Fortis

Uninstall Fortis, restart your PC, then install it again from the download page. This puts the adapter back.

4. Remove other VPN apps

Other VPN apps can get in the way. Uninstall the ones you do not use and restart.
