Free Wi-Fi is everywhere now — coffee shops, airports, hotels, train stations. It is convenient, and most of the time nothing goes wrong. But "most of the time" is exactly the problem. Public networks are shared, often poorly secured, and trivially easy for someone nearby to abuse. This guide explains what actually happens on an open network, why it matters, and how a VPN closes the gap.

Why public Wi-Fi is risky

When you connect to a network you do not control, you are trusting everyone else on it — and whoever set it up. A few of the common problems:

  • Eavesdropping. On an open network, traffic that is not properly encrypted can be read by other devices on the same connection.
  • Fake hotspots. An attacker can broadcast a network named "Airport_Free_WiFi" and wait for people to join. Once you connect, your traffic flows through their equipment.
  • Session hijacking. If a site or app leaks login tokens, someone on the same network may be able to reuse them and access your account.
  • Forced redirects. Malicious hotspots can push you to lookalike pages designed to harvest passwords.

Modern websites use HTTPS, which helps a lot. But not every app handles encryption correctly, DNS lookups often leak what sites you visit, and a hostile network still sees a surprising amount about you.

What a VPN actually does

A VPN — virtual private network — builds an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server you trust. Everything you send goes through that tunnel first, then out to the wider internet from the VPN server.

In practice, that means:

  • The local network sees noise. The coffee shop router, the fake hotspot, the stranger running a packet sniffer — all they see is encrypted traffic to a single server. Not the sites you visit, not what you type.
  • Your DNS requests are protected. The lookups that reveal which sites you are browsing travel inside the tunnel instead of out in the open.
  • Your real IP address is hidden. Websites see the VPN server's address, not your device's, which makes you harder to track and locate.

What a VPN does not do

It is worth being honest here, because overselling security helps no one. A VPN is not a complete shield:

  • It does not protect you from malware you install yourself.
  • It does not stop you from typing your password into a phishing page.
  • It does not make you anonymous if you log straight into accounts tied to your real identity.

Think of a VPN as the lock on your front door. Essential, but you still decide who you let in.

How to stay safe — a simple checklist

  1. Turn on your VPN before you join the network, not after. The riskiest moment is the first few seconds of an unprotected connection.
  2. Forget networks you no longer use so your device does not auto-reconnect to a name an attacker can spoof.
  3. Keep your apps and operating system updated. Most real-world attacks rely on bugs that were already patched.
  4. Use two-factor authentication on important accounts. Even if a password leaks, the second factor stops most takeovers.
  5. Avoid sensitive tasks on networks you do not trust unless your VPN is active — banking and work logins especially.
